Lionel Messi caught insulting Mexican jersey

The No.10 jersey worn by Lionel Messi has a place of pride in the hearts of the athletes and fans. Be it football or cricket, wearing the No.10 jersey has been associated with a special status. From legend Pele to Ronaldinho and Zinedine Zidane to Maradona, the No.10 jersey was worn by football stars who are revered as Gods. And in cricket, God Sachin Tendulkar and South African legend Allan Donald wore the No.10 with panache.

On Sunday, Argentine captain Lionel Messi showed his ugly side inside the dressing room in Qatar after the FIFA World Cup match against Mexico. Yes, Messi, famous for the No.10 jersey imprint, did his job on the field, scoring one goal and assisting with the second. If a video of his has gone viral and is to be believed, Messi was showing massive disrespect to the Mexican jersey inside the changing room. The video suggests the jersey, a symbol of national pride, was near Messi’s foot.

You would expect an inebriated boor to behave in this fashion, where you insult a rival team’s national colors. Certainly not Messi, who has been caught off-side. This time, it’s not a referee or line judge who has blown the whistle but well-known boxer Saul Canelo Alvarez who is breathing fire and hissing. Alvarez is a patriotic boxer who took to Twitter to have a massive swipe at Messi. It’s almost like him inside the ring, wanting to have a go at Messi.

The tone and tenor of Alvarez’s tweets suggest he is deeply hurt by Messi’s lousy behavior. He has gone to the extent of saying Messi has used the Mexican jersey to wipe the floor! There may be a bit of exaggeration in it, but the tweets have gone viral. To be sure, this is not a figment of imagination from Alvarez he is baiting Messi. The storm is full-blown, almost like a pugilist ready to jab, hook and destroy the opponent.

Anger and seething with rage, Mexicans are boiling. On the other end, from hero to villain, it has taken very little time for Messi to get caught in this mess. There is no way this act can be condoned. Sport teaches respect, sport teaches ethics, and to be tolerant towards rival countries in the field of play. These days, when the internet picks up any nugget of news or video or audio bytes, Messi has become a villain.

Lionel Messi’s dressing room antics might balance GOAT debate in Cristiano Ronaldo’s favour

As it were, loyalties are divided between Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as to who is the greatest. It is called the GOAT debate. That debate can go on, but, certainly, Messi has been made to look very sheepish at this point. The Qatar World Cup has been rocked by one controversy after another from Day One. From the Budweiser beer ban inside the arena to banning One Love Armbands, Qatar has seen plenty of headlines being generated. Who would have imagined Messi would something so wonky at this stage of his life when he is playing his World Cup?

The latest drama will again title the balance in favor of Ronaldo, aka CR7, as he has been the epitome of etiquette, and good behavior, and is an emotional, honest man. The Portuguese superstar is the quintessential gentleman who is genteel as well in his approach. Social media will now focus again on these two giants, one from Argentina and the other from Portugal. Right now, it does not matter who scores or misses in front of an open goal. It is all about hurting feelings, which Messi has done.

Oh, Messi, why did you go so crazy in your head? Even the worst of cricket rivalries between India and Pakistan have not produced such reactions. There may be jeering and slogans but certainly not disrespecting the Indian tricolor or the white and green flag of Pakistan. That’s respect for a nation, even if the rivalry across the geographical border of the two nations reaches a crescendo. Sport and flag are special, athletes drape themselves in it, sing the national anthem with pride and let tears roll down their cheeks.

What Messi has done is cheap. How we wish he had not stooped to this level of insulting the colors of Mexico after coming out with flying colors on the field. We have heard of chameleons changing colors. This is a dubious first of sorts in sport, insulting national colors. Why did Messi make a mess of things in the dressing room? This one act is going to paint him black. God forbid, if he runs into Alvarez, the Mexican will box him black and blue. KO, for sure!
