Millions of fans fill Buenos Aires’ streets to cheer for Lionel Messi and company after 2022 FIFA World Cup victory

Argentina

When the Argentinian national team arrived in Buenos Aires on Tuesday, the country celebrated in a big way. The government declared a national holiday and the team was welcomed with a 50-mile parade through the city. Millions of people showed up to congratulate the players on their World Cup win.

The team toured the city on an open-top bus, guarded by security personnel, with the players beating drums and sipping Viajeros, a special mix of Coca-Cola and Fernet, an Italian spirit, served in cut-off plastic bottles. Local media estimated that more than four million Argentines turned up to greet the team, resulting in the parade being stopped ahead of schedule due to the sheer volume of people. Some fans even jumped off bridges to get onto the bus with the players and sadly, one supporter passed away after falling from a downtown monument during the festivities on Sunday night.

The journey of celebration concluded with the team taking to the skies in helicopters over the city. Ever since Argentina won the World Cup for the third time on Sunday, the celebrations have not stopped. On the night of their victory, the streets of the capital were packed with over a million people singing.
