Lionel Messi whispered a special message to his late grandmother before Argentina's World Cup winning penalty
Lionel Messi had a date with destiny on December 18 in Qatar. The Argentine lifted the FIFA World Cup 2022 trophy beating Kylian Mbappe’s France, slotting the ball into the net in the final. Before taking the penalty, Messi looked up at the sky and said some words. It is now revealed that the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner said something to his late grandmother.
Celia Olivera Cuccittini, Messi’s grandmother, died in 1998. She played a huge role in the football star’s childhood. Messi whispered, “Puede ser hoy, abu“. This translates to English – “It could be today, grandma“, As per a Mirror report.
Interestingly, Argentina fans celebrated outside Messi’s grandmother’s house during the Qatar world cup. Fans were heard chanting, “The grandma of Messi”, according to Fox Soccer. Messi’s grandma always insisted he played even when his coach said he was too ‘small’ in his childhood.
The PSG star often celebrates after scoring his goals by raising his hands toward the sky. That is to remember his grandmother, Celia, who always pushed his local coach to play Messi against older kids in his youth.

Ronaldo or Lionel Messi? Who is the GOAT, according to Wes Brown?
Former Manchester United defender, Wes Brown suggests that Lionel Messi is now a step ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo‘s achievements after he won the FIFA World Cup. Speaking on Messi’s performance in Qatar, Wes said, “In my opinion, Messi winning the World Cup just edges it out. Ronaldo has always wanted to win this competition.”
“I believe the main point is that when you talk about Messi, you are also talking about Ronaldo. For the past 15 years, these two have been unchallenged GOATs (Greatest of All Time). Everyone is always focused as to what Ronaldo and Messi are up to.” he added.
He played six years for Manchester United before signing Real Madrid with Ronaldo. The two won the UEFA Champions League (UCL) and Premier League title in 2008. In 2008, Brown faced Messi in the semifinal of UCL semi-finals, which the Red Devils won 1-0 on aggregate.
Ronaldo and Messi will once again step on a football pitch, likely for the last time, as the Portuguese have left Europe. A combined All-Star team of the Saudi Arabia football league is set to face PSG in a friendly clash on January 19.
