Lionel Messi recently gained a roommate to accompany him in the lead-up to the FIFA World Cup final. Argentina has been considered a strong contender to win their first title since 1986, largely due to Messi’s presence in the squad. This time around, however, the 35-year-old was without his longtime friend Sergio Aguero in his room, unlike in previous tournaments.

In 2008, Sergio Aguero and Lionel Messi achieved a momentous victory together at the Olympics. Their friendship has only grown since then, with Aguero even moving to Barcelona to play alongside Messi. Unfortunately, Messi’s move to Paris Saint-Germain left him heartbroken. After Aguero retired last year, it was assumed that Messi would need to find a new friend. Instead, he opted to go solo, concentrating solely on the tournament, while Emiliano Martinez bunked with the staff and the other 24 players were partnered up.

This week, Aguero rejoined the camp in anticipation of the final and reunited with Messi in Qatar. This has led some superstitious fans to worry about Messi’s pre-final preparation being altered, but it’s ultimately good news. The last time these two shared a room was during the Copa America in the summer of 2021, and Argentina went on to win the tournament.

Sunday’s match at the Lusail Stadium could be the last chance Lionel Messi has to win the FIFA World Cup. Although the Argentine star has had an impressive 19-year career, the World Cup title has been elusive. Should he manage to clinch it, he will likely be remembered as the greatest player of this era, especially considering how he has steered his team through to the final despite their opening game loss to Saudi Arabia.

Messi has achieved unparalleled individual accomplishment, taking home seven Ballon d’Or titles and the 2014 World Cup’s Golden Ball award, as well as 36 major club honors from Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain. At long last, his international success was restored in 2021 when Argentina won the Copa América, after three unsuccessful attempts in the championship finals in 2007, 2015, and 2016. Messi was the joint top scorer and was awarded the best player award, paving the way for his performance in the 2022 World Cup.

Since the era of Diego Maradona in 1986, Argentina has seemed to rely heavily on one player – Lionel Messi. This narrative changed somewhat during their Copa América success, as it became more about the team effort of 11 instead of one.

However, statistics show Messi’s growing influence on his national side at World Cups, with his 45 shot involvements (shots and chances created) contributing to 56.3% of Argentina’s total shots. This figure has increased since 2006 and is remarkably similar to Maradona’s influence on Argentina’s World Cup victory in 1986.
