Chelsea right-back Reece James has gone on to become one of the best in his position in Europe over the last few years. However, the 22 years wasn’t always playing in the defensive positions when he was young.
Reece James is one of the 4 full-backs that England could play in the upcoming World Cup this year. Up against the likes of Trent Alexander Arnold, Kyle Walker and Kieren Trippier, Reece James believes that he deserves to play for the 3 Lions and has been one of the best right-backs this season.
Reece James opens up about playing at different positions as a youngster
Speaking about his childhood playing days and favourite idols, Reece James said, “I had been a striker until I was maybe 12 or 13 at Chelsea and I looked up to Drogba. I don’t actually know why, but when I was about 12, I was moved back into midfield.”
“Then, when I was 15, I was moved to right-back – and the first two years I hated it. But then one day it kinda just clicked and I never really looked back from there.”
“Playing as a striker definitely helped me. If you go back five or 10 years, the full-back position definitely wasn’t like it is now. It has evolved a lot. You are a lot freer to do what you want, not really a set defender but with the licence to get forward.”
Reece James enjoyed a stellar season with Chelsea last year. The fullback managed 6 goals and 10 assists in 39 appearances and some of their strikes were pure Golazos as well. Southgate will definitely be scratching his head as he decides who would start for England in future international games.
