This year’s Ballon D’Or strongly favors the French striker. He earned the La Liga Golden Boot with his 27 goals, and he now has 15 goals in the UEFA Champions League. Luis Suarez, a former Barcelona striker, has made a bold statement regarding Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema’s chances of winning the Ballon d’Or in 2022.

Following a productive season across competitions, the Frenchman is largely regarded as the top contender for the prize this year. Benzema scored 44 goals in 46 games to help Madrid win La Liga and make the UEFA Champions League final.

What did Luis Suarez have this to say about Karim Benzema’s chances of winning the Ballon d’Or this year?

Suarez was questioned about his prospects of winning the renowned Golden Ball award, and he had an unexpected response. He stated on the Spanish radio network Cadena SER:

“Yes, for this season. But the Ballon d’Or will always go to Leo because he is the best player in the world, despite the fact that he did not have his year.”

Messi had a challenging first season at PSG, scoring 11 goals and providing 14 assists in all competitions, but he still managed to win the Ligue 1 title. That, though, would not be enough to secure him a record-breaking eighth Ballon d’Or. Apart from Benzema, several other players have had significantly more productive seasons than the Argentine.

Messi’s club teammate Kylian Mbappe (39 goals, 26 assists), Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (31) and Sadio Mane (23 goals and five assists), and Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski (50 goals, seven assists) have all had outstanding seasons.

Winning the Champions League will be the cherry on top for Karim Benzema, confirming his Ballon d’Or triumph. However, if Real Madrid loses in the final, Salah and Mane of Liverpool might overtake him being favorites for the award.
