Manchester United and Eric ten Hag have a huge summer ahead of themselves. With as many as 6 players leaving for free and many others up for sale, fresh young blood is bound to arrive at Old Trafford in the Summer. However, it is not just strengthening the squad that Eric ten Hag has been tasked with. The Dutch manager must also change the team’s playing style and above all choose a new captain.
Harry Maguire has never been truly accepted as a Manchester United captain ever since his arrival back in 2019. The Englishman endured his worst season as a Man Utd player and many believe that he is not the right choice for the captaincy at Old Trafford. Ex-Liverpool player further believes that no one from the current Manchester United squad is fit to captain the side.
Danny Murphy suggests the Manchester United boss to get rid of Harry Maguire
Speaking to White and Jordan, Danny Murphy said, “I don’t think that this should be set in stone, but on this particular occasion this a very important decision for Manchester United moving forward and not one that should be taken lightly. I certainly don’t think it’s one that should be left to the players.”
He continued, “What you could do is leave it as it is to give yourself the time to make the right decision. My feeling is that sometimes the best thing to do for a new manager is to give the captaincy to a player he knows and trusts who he brings in.”
Speaking about Donny van de Beek as a potential contender for captaincy, Murphy said, “Someone who he brings in from the outside. He’s already there and he’s not played enough so that would be a bit farcical, but if you bring in a leader and go boom, you’re the captain as well then you’re kind of together then.”
While Murphy believes a new player should be appointed as captain of Manchester United. Many fans and pundits have also given the name Cristiano Ronaldo and David de Gea. The two were the only players who performed this season for the club. While David has the loyalty aspect to his name, Ronaldo is the only player who can lead from the front and is an undoubted leader on the pitch as well.
