Manchester City opted against PSG’s offer to sign Neymar: Reports
In a noteworthy last summer transfer window development, Paris Saint-Germain ‘offered’ Neymar to Manchester City. According to reports, the French club made the decision after the Brazilian and colleague Kylian Mbappe had a falling out.
During PSG’s Ligue 1 match against Montpellier last month, the two superstars got into an argument about who should take the team’s penalty kicks after the Brazilian refused to let his French teammate take the second one after his first attempt was saved. The fallout between the two saw Neymar ignore the agreement set by Paris Saint-Germain designed to ease tensions.
After the altercation on the pitch, it was reportedly necessary for former Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos to intervene to separate the quarrelling parties in the locker room. PSG manager Christophe Galtier took action to address the situation head-on by calling a first-team meeting during which the two were reprimanded and expressed regret.
Why did Manchester City refuse to sign PSG’s Neymar?
Earlier this summer, Mbappe decided to extend his contract with the Ligue 1 winners for three years. According to sources, as part of the deal to prolong his stay at the Parc des Princes, the striker would have significant influence over the club’s sporting decisions.
The hiring of Luis Campos as the new sporting director may have something to do with Mbappe since the two were comrades at Monaco. These rumours may now be connected to the most recent assertion, made by Marca, that PSG tried to sell Neymar to City this summer. The French team knew no other team would be able to pay the Brazilian’s salary package.
However, it may not come as a surprise that City were not interested in hiring the great forward’s services. Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez were both acquired by Pep Guardiola’s team this summer from Borussia Dortmund and River Plate, respectively, for significant sums of money.
