Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has recently given the green signal about two of his crucial players, Kyle Walker and Kalvin Phillips who have been sidelined due to injury for a long time. The World Cup is just three weeks away from getting started and Gareth Southgate is under serious pressure about which players should board the flight to Qatar along with him.
Southgate has already named his 55-member squad from which he is going to announce the 26 players that are going to represent their country at the World Cup. And Kyle Walker doesn’t want to miss this opportunity as this might be his last World Cup appearance given his age. Both the players are recovering from their injuries and only time will tell if the players will be fully fit to play in the tournament.
With the managers required to submit their squad by November 13, Gareth Southgate will have a tough look at both the City stars and their progress. Phillips has played only 13 minutes this season being out since September with a shoulder injury, and Kyle Walker has been out since the Manchester derby last month due to a groin issue.
What did Pep Guardiola have to say about the recovery of both his players?
In the pre-match conference ahead of their game against Sevilla, Pep Guardiola said, “It’s likely, from the way they recover. I don’t know the intention with Kyle but the doctors know better than me. Gareth (Southgate) has spoken to the players directly. From what I hear in the dressing room, it is likely they can be ready. You don’t play a World Cup every week.”
He added, “We’ve been impressed with Kyle’s recovery but he is late compared to Kalvin. He’s doing partial training sessions with the team, not contact yet. We’ll see his evolution. I know how important the World Cup but I don’t use a player I don’t think is ready. I feel the games will be tight.”
