The 26-year-old Scotland captain came on as a second-half substitute on Sunday against Leicester City. He looked sharp and fresh on the field as Manchester United completely dominated the game. After the 3-0 victory, McTominay posted a picture of him with the caption, “happy to be back.”

Fernandes, a very active individual on social media posts of his teammates, didn’t waste the opportunity to congratulate McTominay. He commented, “Welcome back macterminetor.”

McTominay has been a regular fixture for the Red Devils since his debut in 2017. The Scot suffered a nasty injury during Manchester United’s match against league leaders Arsenal. Manchester United lost the game 3-2 and McTominay went out for six games.

The Hollywood-inspired moniker that the central midfielder received is primarily due to his physicality and his presence in the midfield. Standing at 6’3”, McTominay is extremely strong on the ball and equally dominant. Earlier in last season, when Manchester United demolished their bitter rivals, Leeds United 6-2, Fernandes called him ‘Scottynaldinho’. McTominay had scored two quickfire goals at the very beginning of the game.

The Scot has seen his game time reduce significantly this season after the arrival of Eric Ten Hag. The Dutch manager has emphasised playing from the back which requires impeccable control and technical ability, things that are not McTominay’s strong suit.

According to FbRef, McTominay attempts just 3.67 progressive passes per 90, ranking him in the 21 percentile of the midfielders in the top 5 leagues. His ability to dribble past players in the midfield is also poor, attempting just 1.03 carries per 90. Compared to him, both Eriksen and Casemiro rank in the top 70 percentile.

Since the signing of Casemiro and Eriksen, the Scot has been used to seeing off matches when he has been fit. He has played the full 90 minutes of a game just 5 times this season.

Ten Hag, a tactically astute manager with a proper identity, will want to ingrain his style of play and people in the know believe that Scott McTominay will be retired to the bench in an ideal Ten Hag team where he will be utilised as a squad player.
