Manchester United finally announced the signing of Mason Mount from rivals Chelsea last week. United paid £60 million for the English midfielder. The midfielder is expected to breathe life into the midfield at the theatre of dreams. However, United shocked the footballing world on Wednesday after they announced Mason’s jersey to be the iconic number 7.
With this, Mason Mount thus becomes the 10th permanent owner of the number 7 at Manchester United. It was in 1993 when the shirt numbers were fixed for players and since then number 7 has been worn by greats at Old Trafford. Eric Cantona, David Beckham, George Best, and Cristiano Ronaldo have been some legends to have worn the number 7 for the Red Devils.
However, many of the players have failed to live up to the standards of the jersey. The number was allotted to Alexis Sanchez, Edinson Cavani, Memphis Depay, and Angel Di Maria, who all had a poor run at the club. The number 7 was reallotted to Cristiano when he returned for a second spell at the club.
Ronaldo left for Al-Nassr after terminating his contract at United and the number was left vacant ever since. A lot of rumors suggested young Argentine winger Alejandro Garnacho would take up the number, as his current jersey with number ‘49’ recently was unavailable. However, United have chosen Mason Mount to fill the jersey. The pressure is on Mason to prove his mettle and own the legendary number.

Twitter was critical of United in general. People believed Mount was put under too much pressure by being given the famous jersey. People compared Mount to the last owner of the jersey, the legendary Cristiano Ronaldo, and chided United. “from CR7 to Mickey Mount 7 “said one user. Another fan said “It’s a disrespect to CR7. But what do I care? That’s United these days anyways.”
Fans hoped that the no.7 would be allotted to some other player. “This shirt should have been rightly passed down to garnacho.. Mount will not serve justice to this Jersey.. i am a 10000% sure…” tweeted a user. “We were saving that number for mbappe I’m heartbroken” said another fan.
Thus, Mount has everyone’s eyes glued to him. His performances will be closely monitored and people will expect him to do justice to the jersey, especially after the No. 7 curse at the Red Devils.
