The Manchester United striker, Mason Greenwood, was arrested for the first time in January last year after police raided his home. There were allegations when his girlfriend shared unsettling photographs and videos online. He had been charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behavior, and assault causing actual bodily damage, all against the same complainant. The Crown Prosecution said today that all charges against him had been dismissed.
“We have a duty to keep cases under continual evaluation,” a spokesperson said. “Given the significant media coverage of this case, it is only fair that we share the news that the 21-year-old man, who had been arrested and charged in connection with an investigation opened in January 2022, no longer faces criminal proceedings in relation to this,” said Chief Superintendent Michaela Kerr, GMP’s Head of Public Protection. “In this case, the withdrawal of crucial witnesses and fresh evidence meant that conviction was no longer a realistic possibility.” Greenwood was last seen in court in November when a trial date was set for November 27 this year.
Greenwood last appeared for the Red Devils in January 2022, when United defeated West Ham 1-0. He was detained at the end of that month following the publication of social media photographs and videos provided by a lady citing instances of physical violence. Following the claims, Man United suspended Greenwood, and he was also removed from FIFA 22 and Football Manager, and Nike canceled his sponsorship arrangement. United has yet to respond to the news that all criminal charges have been withdrawn.

Allegations on Mason Greenwood
In January, the 21-year-old striker was detained on rape and assault suspicions. He was also questioned over allegations that he had made death threats. Greenwood, who has played for England on one occasion, has not been charged and had his bail renewed in June. Manchester United also said publicly that he will not be a part of the team until the case resolves.
According to the Greater Manchester Police, “social media photographs and videos posted by a woman describing episodes of physical abuse” have come to their attention. “”We can report that a man in his 20s has subsequently been detained on suspicion of rape and assault,” the statement continued. He was held for interrogation and investigations. The club stated that although they had been made aware of the allegations on social media and that they “do not condone violence of any type,” they would reserve any comment until the “facts have been established.” In a statement, Nike stated: “We are profoundly concerned by the unsettling claims and will continue to closely monitor the situation,” as first reported in The Athletic.
At no point did Greenwood or his representatives respond to the accusations against him. On social media, it can be difficult to remember that one’s actions have real-world repercussions and that what is posted online may impact other people and the administration of justice. Today all allegations against him were dismissed, according to Greater Manchester Police.
