An article written – in October of 2023 – on the website, SpaceXMania titled, “Megan Rapinoe Loudly Booed Off at Guy Fieri’s Restaurant, Gets Kicked Out Immediately,” has turned out to be a satirical piece. A fictional story, the website has clarified that the story was uploaded in the ‘satire’ category and is meant to be humorous and not to be taken seriously.

The piece, written about USWNT player Megan Rapinoe, talks about an incident that occurred in one of American restaurateur Guy Fieri’s restaurants. As the player entered the restaurant, she was met with boos from the crowd which drowned out the noise of the sizzling barbeques. Sources claimed that while a small section of people applauded the player, the vast majority were displeased by the appearance of the football star. Stuck with a tough choice, the restaurant staff had to ask the player to leave due to the ruckus being caused by her presence.

While the story has been debunked as fake, many were quick to believe the story as Rapinoe has remained a controversial figure in the eyes of the American public. Her fight for the inclusion of transgender athletes in women’s sports and involvement in the Black Lives Matter movement – with allegations of her forcing her teammates to ‘bend the knee’ – has caused her to be labelled ‘Anti-American’ by many. Thus when the story was first released on Facebook, people left comments that read: “Good! Finally, people standing up for America!” believing it to be true.

Other such stories have arisen from the same website about the player being kicked out of famous chef, Gordan Ramsey’s restaurant, but that also fell under the ‘satire’ section.

Is the media too harsh on Megan Rapinoe?

A missed penalty in the 2023 Women’s World Cup by Megan Rapinoe led to an early exit for the defending champions. While fans are usually sad when their country exits such a big tournament, a certain section of people were celebrating the nation’s failure due to the 38-year-old.

Former US President, Donald Trump pounced on the opportunity to verbally attack the player stating:

 WOKE EQUALS FAILURE. Nice shot, Megan, the U.S. is going to Hell!!! MAGA.

American Journalist, Megyn Kelly was also particularly harsh on the player stating she was ‘thrilled’ at the failure of the national team additionally stating:

I’m glad you went down. You don’t support America. I don’t support you. And I know I’m not alone.

Megan Rapinoe – while her views cause controversy – has been a great servant to the Women’s National Team and was a vital player for her country when they lifted the Women’s World Cup in 2019 in dominating fashion.
