Former USWNT star and captain Megan Rapinoe has been a vocal proponent for the queer community and for LGBTQ rights for several years. The player, both during her playing years and after her retirement, has made use of her position to support the queer community in their struggle for rights and equal representation. Her comments and opinions have also been the reason for hate and criticism over the years.

In a recent incident concerning Rapinoe and another USWNT star Korbin Albert, Rapinoe publicly censured the latter for a post shared on social media. The post in question features a Christian-themed release that talks about the “immoral nature of homosexuality and feeling transgender in the US“. Rapinoe was quick to censure the young player, underlining her comments as nothing short of ‘hate’.

The 20-year-old’s (Albert) social media accounts such as Tik Tok and Instagram all feature affirmations of her Christian faith. She also makes sure to include a version of the phrase ‘Jesus is king’ in all of her posts.

While Rapinoe took to social media to label the original post as ‘victim mongering’ and inverting the truth, Albert has taken down the post.

20-year-old USWNT star issues public apology after Megan Rapinoe backlash

The Paris Saint-Germain and USWNT star came under immense pressure following Megan Rapinoe‘s comments on her social media post. It didn’t take long before the player issued an apology for the same, repeatedly asking for forgiveness to those she offended in an Instagram story. While several fans criticised the youngster for her comments, some felt that Rapinoe was also in the wrong for censuring a young player.

I want to sincerely apologize for my actions on social media. I'm really disappointed and deeply sorry for the hurt that I have caused to my teammates, friends and anyone who was offended. I promise to do better.

While this is not the first time that there has been a clash of opinions surrounding the queer community, neither was it Rapinoe’s first. Also, controversial journalist and talk-show host Piers Morgan has time and again criticized the former USWNT player for her pro-LGBTQ stance and views on transition.

Rapinoe recently called time on her professional career, after playing her final game for the USWNT against South Africa in a friendly on the 25th of September. Her final game however, ended in heartbreak as she was forced off with an injury, just six minutes into the NWSL final.
