“Everyone should show more respect to one of the greatest athletes,” Mesut Ozil criticizes media for continuous onslaught of Cristiano Ronaldo
Cristiano Ronaldo has come under fire for his questionable antics while representing his club and country, yet Former Arsenal star Mesut Ozil has defended the forward. After mutually agreeing to terminate his contract with Manchester United last month, Ronaldo had a falling out with national team coach Fernando Santos and was benched for their World Cup match against Switzerland.
The 37-year-old has received criticism for his recent behaviour from managers, supporters, and pundits alike, but Mesut Ozil has supported his former teammate and stated that Ronaldo’s critics ‘just want to get attention’.
In a post on social media, Ozil wrote: “I really don’t get where this constant negativity from the press about Cristiano comes from… The Media is just trying to get clicks, and pundits who don’t have a career anymore just want to get attention with his big name and try to make him look bad…”
“I don’t think anyone from the new generation will be able to match his numbers again. He will forever be in his own category. Everyone should show more respect to one of the greatest athletes in sports history,” he added.
Mesut Ozil played alongside Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid for 4 seasons
Prior to joining Arsenal in 2013, Ozil, who is currently plying his trade for Istanbul Başakşehir in Turkey, played alongside Ronaldo for four years. Ronaldo’s first accident took place when he actively participated in an explosive interview with Piers Morgan and criticized Manchester United’s current standards, both on and off the field.
Ronaldo’s contract was mutually terminated shortly after, and the team announced that the 37-year-old was now a free agent. The forward made the decision to concentrate on backing Portugal’s World Cup campaign, but after a fight with Santos, that plan appears to be crashing around him.
During his team’s 2-1 group stage loss to South Korea, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner was substituted and Portugal manager Santos is reportedly angry with Ronaldo’s response. The former Real Madrid forward was subsequently benched for the match against Switzerland which his team went on win 6-1 comfortably.
