Mohamed Salah was ready to return back to Chelsea before signing new £400,000-per-week contract with Liverpool: Reports

Mohamed Salah was preparing to return to Chelsea before agreeing to sign a new contract with Liverpool. The Egypt international has put to rest months of speculation that he could leave Liverpool this summer or next after signing a new contract at Anfield. He has become the club’s highest-paid player after signing a £400,000-per-week contract that will keep him at the club until 2025.

According to reports, the 30-year-old was willing to run down his contract until next year and leave Liverpool on a free transfer. A number of clubs, including Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid, were keeping an eye on the situation.

According to The Sun, one unexpected destination mentioned was Chelsea, where new owner Todd Boehly was preparing to speak with Salah about his contract situation. The forward made it clear to Liverpool’s owners, through his agent Ramy Abbas, that he would consider returning to Stamford Bridge.

Salah spent two years in west London but failed to make an impression, moving on to AS Roma before being signed by Liverpool. He has since established himself as one of the best players in recent Premier League history, winning the most recent PFA Player of the Year award.

A return to Chelsea would have been a dramatic turnaround and one that would not have gone down well at Anfield, where Thomas Tuchel is desperate for attacking reinforcements. Raphinha, Raheem Sterling, and Ousmane Dembele have all been linked recently.

However, after losing Sadio Mane to Bayern Munich this summer, it is unlikely that Liverpool would have sold Salah unless a massive offer came in. After an initial framework was agreed upon, talks on a new agreement have accelerated in recent days.

Salah said, “I feel great and [I am] excited to win trophies with the club. It’s a happy day for everyone. It takes a little bit of time, I think, to renew, but now everything is done so we just need to focus on what’s next.”
