Tom Brady has become co-owner of Birmingham City in partnership with Knighthead Capital, the consortium which owns the club. They feel that Brady entering the club is a huge statement and will benefit them as a whole moving forward. The NFL legend retired recently and has been on the search for a new venture since. During the video announcing his involvement with the club, he said “I know I like being the underdog”. The video was uploaded by Birmingham City on Twitter.
Brady will also be part of an advisory committee which will help in taking decisions for the club. This will mean that the former New England Patriots player can potentially be involved in day to day workings of the club. Birmingham finished 17th in the Championship last season. The owners of the club want the 46-year-old to be an example of fitness as he could potentially help ensure this.
The quarterback retired from the NFL this year and is considered amongst the greatest ever to play the sport. He played 22 seasons in the tournament. While 20 of them were with New England Patriots where he won 6 rings. He spent two seasons at Tampa Bay winning one ring. Brady is one of the most decorated players in the sport. If the knowledge he has from that game translates well to football, this could be a very good move for the Blues.
However, there have been many people skeptical of his involvement in the club as he does not have any experience at that level. Nevertheless, it is good for the popularity of the club as it could potentially gain a huge fan base in the United States. It will also open many sponsorship opportunities from the country.
American celebrities involved with English clubs before Tom Brady
This is not the first time an American star has been involved in an English club. Lebron James is part of the FSG which owns Liverpool. AFC Wrexham is the biggest example of this phenomenon as they have been extremely successful after their takeover by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenny.
Since they took over, the club started their documentary known as ‘Welcome to Wrexham’. It has received rave reviews, thus helping the club financially. They have become a professional club under their ownership after getting promoted to the fourth division of the English football pyramid.
Russell Westbrook, the LA Clippers player also owns some stake in Leeds United. JJ Watt, another former NFL player holds a share in the newly promoted Burnley. Thus, it is not a new phenomenon. It will be interesting to see how Tom Brady’s involvement with the Blues helps them reach the next level.
