“No,” Alan Shearer gives his verdict on the legitimacy of controversial Cristiano Ronaldo penalty in Portugal’s 2022 FIFA World Cup opener

Cristiano Ronaldo
Portugal defeated Ghana 3-2 on Thursday at Stadium 974 in a Group H encounter thanks to a goal from Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo became the first player to score in five World Cups after converting a penalty after a scoreless first half; he also bagged the Man of the match award for his performance.
The Black Stars’ Andre Ayew scored the equalizer, but Portugal went ahead 3-1 when Joao Felix and Rafael Leao scored their first World Cup goals. Osman Bukari’s close-range header made for a tense conclusion, and Diogo Costa came perilously close to giving Inaki Williams an equalizer in stoppage time before the forward slipped.
Apart from the late milestone Cristino Ronaldo has achieved, one of the boiling questions about the match was the penalty given on a soft foul on the Portuguese captain. In a recent Tweet, England legend Alan Shearer responded to the decision by FIFA to award a penalty to Portugal after a “clean” tackle by a Ghana player in the box during their World Cup match. He responded with a “NO” to a tweet seeking fans opinionfans’ on the legitimacy of the penalty.

Ronaldo sets another record as Portugal defeat Ghana 3-2

During Portugal’s 3-2 victory over Ghana at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Cristiano Ronaldo was back in action. They were occasionally troubled by Ghana, continuing a trend of underdog teams raising everyone’s attention, but they completed the task with a sense of professionalism even though it occasionally appeared to be hard.
Ronaldo became the first player to score in a fifth straight World Cup, but this victory was not only based on his absurd capacity for setting and shattering records. Portugal’s ability to be more than the sum of its parts is what caused this. The third goal was equally as much a handoff from Ronaldo to players like Rafael Leao.
Those like Ronaldo and Felix, who have had unsuccessful seasons with their clubs, likely thrive in a midfield like this. Felix hasn’t scored in either the Champions League or La Liga this year despite playing in 10 games. Diego Simeone, the Atletico Madrid coach, had asked him to play a more central role, but under Fernando Santos of Portugal, he seemed liberated on a broader part with more freedom to move forward.
However, as a young team, they will undoubtedly make blunders. Ghana will be upset that Ronaldo was given a penalty, but after tying the score, they made two mistakes and paid the price almost immediately. Portugal will want to invite opponents at them before breaking forward, just like they did at Euro 2016. But this side also can dismantle teams.
