According to the fans, Premier League works extra hard to make sure that defaulters are punished, except when it’s Manchester City! Fans are enraged after news broke that Nottingham Forest were deducted four points for breaching Premier League financial regulations. Following the sanction, Forest dropped to the relegation zone, with 21* points.
Manchester City are infamous for their 115 charges spread over nine seasons – and their ability to walk ‘scot-free’, according to many. While the Cityzens are in contention to defend their Premier League title yet again, many fans deemed it unfair that only weaker or financially inferior teams such as Nottingham Forest and Everton suffered point deductions.
The findings of an independent commission stated that Forest breached the threshold of profit and sustainability rules (losses) by £34.5 million.
Club management did not remain silent either, with their official statement expressing shock, disappointment and harming their trust of the League. Following the points deduction, Forest are now 18th below Luton Town and Everton.
Fans react to Nottingham Forest’s ‘unexpected’ points deduction
No conversation on profit, sustainability and financial fair play is complete without Manchester City. Fans were quick to point out the ‘age-old’ observation that City somehow manage to remain unpunished amidst all the chaos. A comment read that every club except Manchester City fall into the purview of the fair play committee.
Some said that City were lucky to stay in the league since a ‘proper’ sanction would land them in the third division. Creative nicknames like ‘Nottingham FourLess’ and ‘115 Charges FC’ were thrown around in the air. Others pointed out how Luton Town were the real winners in this situation as Nottingham’s drop to 18th helps massively in their relegation fight.
Some were convinced that City will somehow manage to escape the charges and keep playing without repercussions. Some mocked the league and sarcastically added that 4 points from a relegation contender wasn’t harsh enough. That being said, Forest will not have to pull something special out of the bag if they are to maintain their spot in the league. They gained promotion to the top flight in the 2022/23 season.
