Olivier Giroud is one of the most decorated players in French football. The 37-year-old ‘target man’ has won almost every other trophy with Les Blues except for one that has constantly eluded his grasp – the UEFA Euro Cup. He also dropped massive hints toward a possible retirement from national team if they win the tournament altogether.

The AC Milan forward said:

I am missing this Euro. If we win it, I might bow out. This might also be the case if we don't make it to the very end.

Giroud won the 2018 World Cup and various other prestigious titles like the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, Premier League, and the Puskas award. Noteworthy is his runner-up position in the 2016 Euro Cup against Portugal, considered his best performance. This fueled his determination to attain the “missing” trophy. Since 2011, when he joined the senior team, Giroud has become Les Blues’ all-time top scorer, with 56 goals.

Now, in a conversation with RMC Sport, Giroud also revealed that he contemplated retirement had France won the 2022 FIFA World Cup. But he did not. He said:

I have hopes and ambitions with the National team. I am hungry for trophies, and if all goes well, it's probable that retirement is a possibility.

This comes after the Euro 2024 draw. Subsequently, France are drawn alongside Austria, Netherlands, and ‘playoff winner A’ in Group D.

France set to face the Netherlands in Euro group stage – Olivier Giroud reacts

Olivier Giroud reacted to the group stage draw as France were chosen alongside the Dutch, Austria, and ‘playoff winner A’ (any one team from Poland, Wales, Finland, and Estonia). Reacting to the same, he felt that group D offers slightly easier competition than the last Euro competition, where they were drawn alongside Germany, Portugal, and Hungary.

Giroud also said that the Netherlands are ‘familiar opponents’ and that they have always closely contested with them. Meanwhile, speaking on Austria, he said:

They have good young players who play in big clubs.

As for the play-offs team, Giroud opined that Poland and Wales will offer more threat on paper. Despite their electric form and formidable line-up, the #9 admitted that the group ‘will not be easy’ and that it will call for good matches early on in the tournament. The Euro 2020 saw favorites France crash out against Switzerland in the Round of 16.

The 2024 Euro group stage draw was held on Saturday at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg. Fans are thrilled at the prospect of Italy’s potential title defense but also know that France, England, and Spain can offer significant threats. The tournament will be held 6 months from now, from June 14 to July 14 in Germany.
