“One of our best centre backs”- Gareth Southgate explains why he selected Harry Maguire over Fikayo Tomori for 2022 FIFA World cup
Harry Maguire Gareth and Southgate
Gareth Southgate, the Three Lions’ head coach, has explained why he chose not to include Fikayo Tomori on the World Cup roster. After announcing his 26-man roster for the trip to Qatar, Southgate gave a press conference. The Englishman claims that Tomori hasn’t contributed enough to displace the team’s other senior center-backs such as Harry Maguire . He said: “We don’t think the young ones [center-backs] have done quite enough to push the older ones out”. And Southgate also stated that “Yes, I’m sure Harry Maguire is one of our best centre backs”.
Since he finished his transfer from Chelsea to the Serie A, Tomori has been an important member of the AC Milan squad. However, Southgate has been receiving a lot of criticism from the English media for leaving out Fikayo Tomori, the starting defender for AC Milan.
Tammy Abraham, Jodan Sancho, and Southampton’s James Ward Prowse are three more players who were unexpectedly left off the team. After helping England reach the 2018 World Cup semifinals in Russia, Southgate will be hoping to help the country win the tournament this time. The Three Lions face Iran in their inaugural match on Monday, November 21, 2022.
FIFA World Cup pick of Conor Gallagher is explained by England manager Gareth Southgate
Conor Gallagher’s inclusion in England’s World Cup roster was somewhat unexpected, but Gareth Southgate has provided an explanation, claiming Emile Smith Rowe would have been selected if it weren’t for an injury. On Thursday, the England coach revealed his 26-man roster for the next competition in Qatar, and Gallagher was one of many unexpected choices.
The 22-year-old made his England debut in November of last year after a successful loan stint at Crystal Palace, and he also played in the summer. However, this season, due to less playing time at Chelsea, his parent club, he lost his spot for the international matches in September.
However, Southgate was pleased with how he responded while playing for the Under-21 team and believes that his all-action, high-energy approach is radically different from that of the other midfielders for England. When asked about his decision, Southgate said, ‘’He’s fantastic at pressing the ball and I think there are going to be moments in these games where we need certain attributes and there are any number of players in this squad with different attributes to be able to utilise at those moments.” Tammy Abraham, Ivan Toney, James Ward-Prowse, and the injured Chelsea duo of Reece James and Ben Chilwell were among the prominent players who were left out of the squad.
