Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has returned the comments back on Zlatan Ibrahimovic who barbed over Erling Haaland a few days ago. Pep and Zlatan had previously shared the Barcelona dressing room together during Pep’s time as a Barcelona manager and Zlatan struggled that season under his management and said that he could do the same with Erling Haaland holding him back from his reaching full potential.
He continued by saying that Pep has a very indulging ego that might prove to be costly for Erling Haaland. He said that Guardiola signed him at Barcelona in 2009, and wasted his whole season by not giving him proper chances and then sold him after just one season, as the manager chose to build the squad around Leo Messi.
When asked about the performance of Haaland, who has been simply unstoppable this season having scored 22 goals in 15 games for City, Ibrahimovic said, “Is Guardiola able to improve him? That depends on the ego that Guardiola has, if he allows himself to be bigger than Haaland or not. He didn’t allow me or the others to be as big.”
What did Pep Guardiola say about the comments made on Erling Haaland by Ibrahimovic?
On hearing the comments made by his former player, Pep had made a sarcastic response was right about his huge edo. He said, “He is right, he is completely right. In this club, in this team, my ego is beyond every other person, every player. I don’t like it when Erling scores three goals and all the highlights are for him. I’m so jealous! Honestly, I’m so jealous!”
He added, “I said ‘Erling, please no more goals, otherwise the newspapers won’t talk about me, and just about me. He’s right, he [Ibrahimovic] knows me perfectly. Maybe he can write another book. When it was put to him that he was being sarcastic, Guardiola doubled down on his reply and said: “No, I’m right in what I’m saying. My ego is whoosh!”
