Two Peterborough Women’s Team players had a regrettable experience on social media following their magnificent performances against Long Buckby AFC. Peterborough players Tara Mae Kirk and Keir Perkins were subject to condescending and patronizing messages on Twitter after the club posted their images for scoring braces in their latest match.

Tara Mae Kirk has over 24K followers on Instagram while Keir Perkins has a private social media presence. The messages under the club’s recent post of the two were filled with condescending comments. Comments such as ‘Kirk > Messi and Ronaldo’ and ‘She must win the Ballon d’Or are just to mention a few. The club has understood that these comments are due to the players’ appearances rather than their footballing ability.

They added that some of the comments under their recent post left them “appalled”. The club stressed that such messages will be reported and that those who post such messages will be prohibited from interacting with the club in any form. The club also called for social media companies to put up necessary rules and regulations for the same.

Peterborough offers clarification on recent social media ‘incident’

Following the recent incident involving Tara Mae Kirk and Keir Perkins, the official Twitter of the Peterborough Women’s team were forced to make official comment. The club initially condemned “all forms of social media abuse” but was forced to issue further clarification for the same. Comments of a ‘sexual’ and ‘objectifying‘ nature were seen under certain posts in the club’s official Twitter account.

In an explanatory post, the club said that the “unacceptable comments” and “social media abuse” pertained to those that were “explicitly sexual”. The club stressed that there will be a ‘no tolerance’ policy if fans break the club’s “communication policies” and as well as Twitter guidelines. In an added effort to combat the same, the club has also deleted any comment that was explicitly sexual in nature.

Moreover, this was done prior to the initial statement to protect the welfare of the club’s players. This is not the first time that such an incident has occurred in football. From the Luis Rubiales incident in Spain to the Zambia Women’s team coach, women’s football has been plagued with such unfortunate incidents.
