Phil Foden to pocket more than seven times his initial wages after signing new contract with Manchester City: Reports
With his new Manchester City contract, Phil Foden will become one of the world’s highest-paid young players. Foden is set to sign a six-year contract with Manchester City that will pay him £225,000/€270,000 per week at the Etihad, putting him above Ederson, Bernardo Silva, and Riyad Mahrez on the club’s payroll.
Foden, the poster boy of City’s academy, broke into the first team in 2018 and has grown in influence since then. His first professional contract paid him £30,000 per week, so his current deal will be more than seven times that.
The contract also benefits England manager Gareth Southgate by securing Foden’s club future ahead of the upcoming winter World Cup in Qatar. Last season, Foden had 14 goals and 11 assists in all competitions, with nine and five in each column as Pep Guardiola’s side won the Premier League by one point over Liverpool. He has two goals in 16 appearances for England.
The arrival of Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund may limit Foden’s minutes in attack for much of the 2021/22 season, but with Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus departing for Chelsea and Arsenal, respectively, Foden is set to feature prominently elsewhere in the final third.
Who are the top earners at Manchester City?
Kevin De Bruyne is still City’s highest-paid player, earning €24.4 million/£20.8 million per year. On that podium, he is joined by Haaland (€22.83m/£19.5m) and Jack Grealish (€18.3m/£15.6m).
According to various English outlets, Foden’s new contract will be announced either this week or next. “An offer had been on the table for a number of months but bosses at the Etihad Stadium are delighted with what they feel is a significant boost ahead of the new season,” they proclaimed.
