Former Arsenal and Real Madrid superstar Mesut Ozil has been having a tough time in Turkey with the Super Lig team Istanbul Basaksehir this season. Ozil joined Basaksehir on a one-year contract with an option to extend it last summer after leaving Fenerbahce, who terminated his contract by mutual consent at the end of the previous season. Now reports say that the 34-year-old is not likely to hunt for a new club after informing his teammates that he has decided to call it quits on his career.

Ozil was hoping to restart his career with Basaksehir, but sports journalist Yakub Cinar said the club terminated the midfielder’s contract prematurely after only seven appearances. Ozil’s agent, Dr Erkut Sogut, disclosed earlier that the midfielder is now passionate about competitive gaming and streaming. Thus, his post-football career may already be in the works.“I believe he will no longer play for any other team. I don’t think so – it’ll be Fenerbahce, and that’ll be the end of it,” Sogut told The Telegraph.

The World Cup winner has only made seven appearances in all competitions for Istanbul Basaksehir since joining the club in the summer. Ozil was one of the best playmakers in the world during his prime, shining for both Real Madrid and Arsenal. However, his career stalled dramatically after 2020, and it now appears to be coming to an end. Ozil went to England in 2013, joining Arsenal in a £42.5 million deadline day deal after winning La Liga and the Copa del Rey with Real Madrid.

Mesut Ozil to become A Professional Gamer

Mesut Ozil is poised to become a professional gamer once he retires from football, which could happen sooner rather than later, considering his current circumstances at Fenerbahce. Ozil and colleague Ozan Tufan were dropped from the Fenerbahce first-team squad in March after a verbal spat with the club’s temporary manager, Ismail Kartal. After falling out of favor at Arsenal under Mikel Arteta, the World Cup champion joined the Turkish powerhouse in January 2021.

Ozil has played 37 times for Fener and scored nine goals but now finds himself in the same scenario, with incoming boss Jorge Jesus assuring him he would not play as he has “had his time”. The former Real Madrid playmaker has two years left on his contract but is already planning his post-football future. Dr Erkut Sogut, Ozil’s agent, has announced that the former German international will focus on competitive gaming.

In 2018, Ozil created his Twitch channel, which already has 175,000 subscribers. He frequently broadcasts Fortnite and a crazy rumor that his gaming addiction caused his ongoing back issues was circulating a few years ago. When the absurd claim was made, Ozil, who was then playing for Arsenal, had amassed 600 victories and participated in 5,221 20-minute matches on the free-to-play game from Epic Games.
