Portugal confirms 26-men squad for 2022 FIFA World Cup; Renato Sanches excluded

Renato Sanches and Cristiano Ronaldo

Coach Fernando Santos will be hoping that his team can live up to the expectations when Portugal competes in their eighth World Cup in Qatar. Their highest placing was third in 1966, and they have yet to win the prized trophy. They were placed in Group H with South Korea, Ghana, and Uruguay.

Not an easy group to be in, but with the resources they have at their disposal, they have a good chance of moving on to the knockout rounds, barring a dramatic upset. Renato Sanches, who was once considered a generational prospect, has fallen short of predictions. After joining PSG in the summer, he is fighting for playing time there and has missed the cut.

Cristiano Ronaldo is once again the source of Portugal’s hopes. The male footballer with the most international goals will attempt to boost his total in Qatar and lead his country to the greatest honor in world football. Rafael Leao of AC Milan and Joao Felix, who are both injured, will assist him admirably. Diogo Jota and Pedro Neto are both sidelined. There is no room for Goncalo Guedes, who is completely excluded, but Andre Silva and Goncalo Ramos have made the cut.

Cristiano Ronaldo will play an important role for Portugal in this FIFA World Cup

Renato Sanches won’t be representing Portugal at the FIFA World Cup this summer because he wasn’t selected for the 35-man preliminary group, but Cristiano Ronaldo will. Ronaldo will lead the team once more as they strive for greater success. Portugal is the current European champion, therefore they will have high expectations for this summer’s tournament.

Sanches excelled in that contest and was named the best young player at Euro 2016. But since moving to Bayern Munich after the competition, his popularity has plummeted.

The young Portuguese sensation was on loan at Swansea City for the 2017–18 season. For the Welsh team in a season that saw them relegated, he has only made nine Premier League starts. Given this, it’s not surprising that Sanches didn’t make the team, despite the fact that he was an important player in the XI when he was 18 years old two years ago. Ronaldo, 33, will have a significant part once more as Real Madrid experiences yet another remarkable campaign. He has scored 42 goals across all competitions despite a sluggish start to the season.
