Portugal offers Jose Mourinho national team head coach role: Reports

Jose Mourinho

Portugal has reportedly approached Jose Mourinho to take on the position of head coach for their national team, with Fernando Santos’ tenure set to come to an end. The Selecao were eliminated from the 2022 FIFA World Cup by Morocco in the quarter-finals, resulting in Cristiano Ronaldo’s last appearance in the tournament finishing in disappointment.

Portugal is already in the process of finding someone to take Santos’s place and La Gazzetta dello Sport has indicated that Mourinho could be an option. The experienced manager is presently in charge of AS Roma and is focused on getting them back in the Champions League this season.

Portugal is attempting to entice Mourinho by offering him an unprecedented chance to manage both club and country simultaneously. The 59-year-old is said to be quite interested in the idea. Mourinho is renowned as an exceptionally talented and well-strategized coach, having achieved great success with teams like Porto, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Chelsea.

Last season, he achieved a major milestone for Roma, securing their first major European title in over six decades, and being the first-ever winner of the Europa Conference League. In the past, he had been suggested as a contender for England’s head coaching position, but he had declined the offer. Though, Portugal’s offer to share coaching duties may be difficult to decline.

Fernando Santos to resign from his position following Portugal’s elimination from the FIFA World Cup: Reports

It appears likely that Fernando Santos will be departing his position as head coach of Portugal’s national team following their elimination from the 2022 FIFA World Cup as per the reports. The Selecao opened up the tournament in Qatar with a 3-2 victory over Ghana, followed by a scoreless tie with Uruguay. Despite suffering a 1-0 loss to South Korea, Portugal still managed to advance to the knockout stages.

The Portuguese team had great success against Switzerland, with a 6-1 victory, and appeared to be headed for a promising quarter-final face-off against Morocco. However, the match ended in a 1-0 loss after Youssef En-Nesyri scored in the first half. Luis Figo charged Santos, the manager, with the blame for the defeat and questioned why he had not started the five-time Ballon d’Or winner earlier. When the player did enter the match in the 51st minute, his presence had no substantial effect on the result.

The Portuguese football federation is reportedly looking to make a change and could appoint a new manager soon. In September 2014, Santos took over from Paulo Bento as the manager of the Portuguese national team after the FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Since then, he has become the most successful manager of the team, leading them to their first major championship win with the UEFA European Championship in 2016.
