Portuguese media slams Cristiano Ronaldo after he fails miserably against Spain in UEFA Nations League

Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo has faced criticism from domestic media for his poor on-field performance. The Portuguese press has urged that Ronaldo be removed from the team’s starting XI due to his poor performance in the current season.

Cristiano Ronaldo was criticized before the game even started, and his performance against Spain won’t have helped his defense’s case for keeping the team. As Ronaldo approaches his 38th birthday and has won the Ballon d’Or five times, this might easily be referred to as his worst stretch of play throughout his career.

Cristiano Ronaldo has only started three games this season for Manchester United, and only one of those games has ended in a victory, leading to his dismissal by new manager Erik ten Hag. After a summer in which he sought to leave Old Trafford, it seemed unlikely that he will force his way back into the starting lineup of a squad that currently appears better off without him.

Even though he recently stated that he also wants to play at Euro 2024, his position in the Portugal team for the World Cup is now in doubt. Portuguese outlet A Bola used the headline “Less Ronaldo, More Portugal” ahead of the Nations League group-stage match against Spain.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s run of poor performance continues

The former Real Madrid player failed to score and gave away a penalty in the last match against Czech Republic, according to their argument, hence he should have been benched. Despite the headline, Fernando Santos chose to start the star striker on Tuesday night against their neighbours because of the supporters’ memories of his hat-trick against their opponents at the 2018 World Cup.

However, the game and his performance were hardly a return to Russia, and compilations of his highlights demonstrate that he was not at his best. He appeared to be quite frustrating as shots were missed, passes were errant, and generally speaking. Even more ironically, or at least that’s what you have to believe, one supporter added the goat emoji next to the video.

Ronaldo has lost his abilities, which is relatively normal at the age of 37, according to one Ronaldo fan page. “We have to accept he’s not the same guy anymore.”

A United page added, “Cristiano Ronaldo still has the mentality, but his abilities are fading, and it’s normal with age. No matter how much you love him, have to admit it’s time to gradually step aside.

“I’m not criticising him. Just a reminder that every good thing MUST come to an end.”

Zach Lowry, a Portuguese football journalist, continued, “There is zero reason why Cristiano Ronaldo should still be starting for Portugal in 2022. Not when there are so many more quality players like Joao Felix, Pedro Neto, and Rafael Leao standing by. He gave another anonymous performance today.

Not only was his performance criticised, but the Portugal captain was also seen dumping the armband after the game. In the third iteration of the competition, the first-place Nations League winners just required a draw to advance. Despite Ronaldo’s dismal performance, they appeared to be headed for a draw until Alvaro Morata’s late strike for the guests broke the tie. Instead, Spain won the group and advanced alongside Italy to the semifinals.
