Premier League 2022-23 Manchester United v Liverpool: Preview, Team News Possible Line-Ups, Prediction

Manchester United and Liverpool

Man United is presently last in the Premier League after losing their first two games to Brentford and Brighton & Hove Albion, while Liverpool, who finished second last season, is 12th after drawing their opening two matches against Fulham and Crystal Palace.

When Erik ten Hag accepted the position as manager of the Red Devils in May, he would not have been in denial about the scope of the work ahead of him at Old Trafford, but the reality of the issue has become even more clear to the 52-year-old over the first few months of his tenure.

Man United lost to Brighton 2-1 at home to begin their 2022–23 Premier League season on August 7 before being shocked by Brentford 4-0 last weekend. All of the goals scored by the home team came in the first half of the game. The Red Devils are currently at the bottom of the division after the two losses and a further defeat on Monday will push them much further down.

The league standings aren’t worth much at this point in the season, but a victory over Liverpool, who have just two points after two games, would put the 20-time English champions above their rivals and possibly serve as a springboard for a successful run.

Team News:

Cristiano Ronaldo and Salah

Last season, Liverpool humiliated Man United in both of their Premier League contests, losing 5-0 at Old Trafford and 4-0 at Anfield. Jurgen Klopp‘s team has won each of their last three league meetings, and the Red Devils haven’t defeated their rivals in England’s top division since March 2018.

The Cristiano Ronaldo transfer saga continues to dominate the news, so it will be interesting to see if the Portugal international starts this game once more. The match could be his final one for Man United at Old Trafford, and a transfer before the end of the month is still very likely.

To earn a point in a 2-2 draw against Fulham on the opening weekend of the season, Liverpool twice had to come from behind. On Monday, they also fell behind early against Crystal Palace thanks to Wilfried Zaha before Luis Diaz equalized just before the hour. Given that Darwin Nunez received a red card against Patrick Vieira’s team and is now ineligible to go to Old Trafford, the Reds must take extra precautions to prevent Man City from gaining an early and substantial advantage.

After this match against Bournemouth and Newcastle United, Klopp’s team plays two straight home games before a brief trip to Goodison Park. The gap between Liverpool and Man City in the Premier League last season was just one point, and they also won the FA Cup and EFL Cup doubles, defeating Chelsea in both finals.

However, the Reds’ defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League was disappointing. The team will need to quickly reach last season’s level if they hope to keep pace with Man City in the Premier League standings, as Pep Guardiola’s team appears to be overwhelmingly strong once more. Liverpool wouldn’t be in panic mode even if they lost on Monday, but Man City only dropped points in nine of their 38 Premier League games last season, and two points from their final eight games.

Possible starting lineup for Manchester United:

De Gea; Dalot, Varane, Martinez, Malacia; Fernandes, Fred, Eriksen; Sancho, Ronaldo, Rashford

Possible starting lineup for Liverpool:

Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson; Elliott, Fabinho, Henderson; Salah, Firmino, Diaz
