Premier League star beats Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in an intriguing stat
Aleksandar Mitrovic, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo
Serbian striker Aleksandar Mitrovic reached his 50th international goal sooner than both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. The Fulham striker reached 50 goals for Serbia in his 76th match, contributing to a 2-0 Nations League victory over Norway and a promotion to League A.
Aleksandar Mitrovic had every right to claim so, having scored 50 goals in 76 games, which is more than Cristiano Ronaldo (114), Lionel Messi (107), and a number of other superstars, including Wayne Rooney and Robert Lewandowski.
A favourite of Craven Cottage supporters and a well-liked jokester at the practise facility, “Mitro” even celebrated the promotion in legendary style by indulging in pizza in the locker room after the game.
Later Aleksandar Mitrović had some issues with his ankle
It wasn’t all good news, though, as the 28-year-old striker was later spotted walking towards the sideline with what appeared to be a substantial ice pack wrapped around his ankle. That might cause issues when Mitrovic plays his previous team Newcastle in the Premier League the following week in an effort to overtake Haaland, the only player ahead of him in the race for the Golden Boot.
However, as Fulham supporter, TV host and best-selling author Richard Osman explained to sources, the Cottagers are far from a one-man team.
“Everyone wrote us off and everyone wrote Mitrovic off,” he said.
“It’s one of those instances when you’re a fan of a club we sort of knew we had something going. Last time we were in the Premier League – I know we’re a yo-yo club – but last time we had a good team – we had Joachim Andersen, we had Mitrovic then but they didn’t play cohesively we had Alphonse Areola in goal.
“We had a really really good team, certainly too good to go down, but we went down.
“I think we know that Marco Silva is certainly a very, very good manager for us and again we’ve bought well.
“There was a Nottingham Forest clip that went viral where they’re previewing the game against us and they kept calling us Mitrovic, they said ‘we’ve got this game against Mitrovic’.
If we’re a one man team then it’s Joao Palhinha, that’s the best signing anyone has made in the Premier League, he’s such a terrific footballer.”
