Brentford and England attacker Ivan Toney has been banned from all football for eight months after admitting to 232 breaches of betting rules. The Football Association withdrew 30 of the initial 262 breaches. While Toney reportedly admitted the remaining charges which fell under Rule E8 for placing bets between February 25, 2017, and January 23, 2021.

Toney will not be eligible for return to action until January 16, 2024, for the Premier League side. He has also been fined £50,000 and has also received a warning as to his future conduct. The FA has reportedly ruled that Toney will not be allowed to train with Brentford until the halfway point of his ban in September.

Brentford, as of now, are waiting for the full written reasons for Toney’s suspension. But they have said they will “consider their next steps”. The club has issued a statement regarding this matter. The statement read, “Brentford FC notes the decision of an independent Regulatory Commission to issue an eight-month ban from all football and football-related activity to Ivan Toney with immediate effect. Ivan was charged with breaches of FA rule E8 and had a personal hearing earlier this week. Brentford FC is currently awaiting the publication of the written reasons of the independent Regulatory Commission. We will review them before considering our next steps.

Earlier on, FA issued the statement regarding Ivan’s suspension. They said, “Ivan Toney has been suspended from all football and football-related activity with immediate effect for eight months, which runs up to and including 16 January 2024, fined £50,000 and warned as to his future conduct for breaches of The FA’s Betting Rules. The Brentford FC forward was charged with 262 breaches of FA Rule E8 in total between 25 February 2017 and 23 January 2021. The FA subsequently withdrew 30 of these breaches and he admitted to the remaining 232 “.

The statement further read “His sanctions were subsequently imposed by an independent Regulatory Commission following a personal hearing. He is permitted to return to training only with his club for the final four months of his suspension starting from 17 September 2023.The independent Regulatory Commission’s written reasons for these sanctions will be published in due course, and The FA will wait to review them before commenting further.”

Brentford are reportedly interested in 29-year-old Netherlands goalkeeper Mark Flekken. Brentford’s current shot-stopper David Raya is set to leave the club in the summer.

Raya is reportedly set to leave the club. This was already rumored as he declined the club’s proposal to extend his contract. He would be looking for a new adventure elsewhere after the end of this season. Raya is reportedly attracting interest from other clubs in England. Tottenham Hotspurs seem to be interested in signing the Brentford shot-stopper as their goalkeeper and captain Hugo Lloris is set to leave the club after this season.

Brentford might sign the Dutch goalkeeper should their No.1 keeper leaves the club this summer. Flekken has a £13 million release clause, from German club Freiburg.
