Premier League clubs want the ‘taking the knee’ movement to stop before every match in the upcoming 2022/23 season: Reports
Premier League players taking the knee before the start of every match.
All the Premier League teams have reported that they want the knee-taking thing to stop before every single game ahead of the 2022/23 season. After a meeting that was held a few days ago regarding this situation, the decision finally came and most captains have agreed that the movement should be saying the movement has lost its importance and the gesture is no more appealing to the world.
From the 2020/21 season, all the Premier League clubs had shown their support regarding the Black Lives Matter movement by wearing bands, taking a knee before every match, and also promoting the gesture in a few other local cups and the FA Cup as well and the anti-racism gesture of the Premier League also gathered appreciation all over the world since its arrival.
The ultimate motto of this Premier League gesture?
This movement first came into prominence through NFL player Colin Kaepernick way back in 2016, and it was carried forward by F1 superstar Lewis Hamilton after the unjust killing of George Floyd in the US in 2020. But as for now. players such as Wilfried Zaha and Ivan Toney have spoken against it and want the gesture to stop.
According to reports suggested by Mail Plus, some captains have come to the notion that the gesture should only be applicable for some selected matches and have also added that the gesture has lost its importance among people. They posed the idea that it should only be followed in important matches and big money games such as the cup finals and the derbies when people all over the world will be following the names and it would be beneficial.
It would be unfair to say that all clubs are against the movement as some clubs have been neutral despite the meeting being held and are fine with carrying forward the gesture. Bournemouth who has qualified for this season have already announced that their players will not be taking the knee for the 2022/23 season along with Crystal Palace player Wilfried Zaha who also said, “I feel like taking a knee is degrading.”
He feels that the movement opposes its purpose and says that the gesture is invalid saying that these things are not making feel equal at all. He says that unless there is any sort of change in the world and until any action is taken, he would not like to hear about these things.
He added “Growing up, my parents just let me know that I should just be proud to be black, no matter what, and I just think we should stand tall. I think the meaning behind the whole thing is becoming something that we just do now. That’s not enough. I’m not going to take the knee.”
