PSG hires Luis Campos to succeed Leonardo as sporting director

Luis Campos to join PSG

According to ESPN, PSG dismissed sporting director Leonardo of his responsibilities on Saturday and is expected to select Luis Campos as his replacement. Campos was the favorite for the position after Kylian Mbappe, who penned a three-year contract to stay in Paris on Saturday, put his name forward.

Campos, 57, is one of Europe’s most well-known sporting directors. He helped build the Mbappe-led Monaco club that won Ligue 1 in 2017, and he oversaw the Lille team that did the same in 2021.

Is Luis Campos the right man for the PSG job?

PSG this season

Luis Campos left Lille in December 2020 and is currently aiding the Celta Vigo project while waiting for a large team to come calling. According to ESPN, discussions between the Portuguese and PSG went smoothly on Sunday, and a deal is anticipated to be revealed on Monday.

Campos and Mbappe’s family have been friends since their time together in Monaco when Campos kept an eye on the young prodigy and assisted him in his development. One of the major considerations in the 23-year-old France forward’s decision to remain in Paris was Leonardo’s decision to step down as director and be replaced by Campos.

Summer will be a hectic time for the new sporting director. If they can not find a good replacement for Mauricio Pochettino, PSG will most likely sack him. According to insiders, Zinedine Zidane is at the summit of the club’s list of possible managers, but they may have a hard time persuading the ex-Real Madrid manager to take the post.

PSG will need to unload players, particularly in midfield, in order to pursue four of their top targets: Ousmane Dembele and Frenkie de Jong of Barcelona, Aurelien Tchouameni of Monaco, and Renato Sanches of Lille.
