PSG owner interested in buying Barcelona’s biggest rivals: Reports
Nasser Al-Khelaifi
According to reports, the Qatari owners of Paris Saint-Germain have made a purchase offer for Espanyol of LaLiga. Chen Yansheng, a Chinese businessman and the head of Rastar Group, who has controlled Espanyol since 2016, has put up the Spanish side for sale.
Chen has reportedly already had two offers, one from a North American organisation and the other from Qatar Sports Investments, according to Radio Marca. Since 2011, the group led by chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi, has bought PSG and turned them into a dominant force in European football. The French team has won eight of the past ten Ligue 1 championships and advanced to the 2020 Champions League final.
After PSG acquired Neymar in 2017, the relationship between Barcelona and PSG has been sour for a while. Little changed as a result of Lionel Messi’s free transfer from Camp Nou to Parc des Princes last season. Recent criticism of Barcelona’s finances has come from PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi, who most recently questioned if the Catalan giants’ operations during the summer were even legitimate.
According to the aforementioned source, the owners of the Ligue 1 champions are now allegedly plotting more measures to hurt Barcelona and unseat them as the top team in Catalonia. To create a squad that “overshadows” the Blaugrana, PSG owner Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar, now wants to acquire Barça’s regional rivals RCD Espanyol.
Psg owners want to create a network of “satellite clubs“
Due to their perceived status as a state-funded club and the near monopoly they have created in French football as a result of their overwhelming financial support, their ownership model has drawn criticism. PSG is the sole club in Qatar Sports Investments’ portfolio as of right now, but the company has been mentioned in connection with the acquisition of Roma in Serie A and is reportedly also considering the purchase of Braga in Portugal.
If they were to purchase Espanyol, it would be against UEFA rules for the Spanish team—which participated in the Europa League two years ago—to participate in European competition. It might be the beginning of a network resembling all the “satellite clubs” owned by Manchester City’s owners, Abu Dhabi United Group.
City Football Group currently owns shares in the Premier League champions as well as Troyes (France), Palermo (Italy), Girona (Spain), Melbourne City (Australia), Lommel (Belgium), New York City (USA), Montevideo City Torque (Uruguay), Mumbai City (India), Yokohama F. Marinos (Japan), and Sichuan Jiuniu (China).
Last season, Manchester City loaned 12 players to various organisations, including Patrick Roberts to Troyes and Daniel Arzani to Lommel.
