PSG President addresses squad including Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe after tough Ligue 1 week
PSG have lost two consecutive matches in Ligue 1
PSG have endured a dreadful 2023 so far, with club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi now taking drastic action in a bid to spur Christophe Galtier’s side out of their current slump. PSG suffered their second consecutive league defeat on Sunday, going down 1-0 to Olympique Lyon, after they were bested by Rennes 2-0 the previous week prompting the situation.
“The president came and spoke to us in the dressing room, and what is said in the dressing room stays in the dressing room. But it was important for him to be there,” Galtier told reporters. “The current situation is unacceptable. We need to react. We need total commitment and focus on the result. When the players are on the same page and fully committed we can perform well.”
The past week has also been marked by off-field matters concerning the future of Lionel Messi and the image rights of Kylian Mbappe, following a statement made by the France captain via Instagram on Thursday. The president was seen on the training pitch conversing with sporting director Luis Campos before heading over to speak with the PSG manager and watch the first team train at the Camp des Loges training ground.
Galtier has come under pressure after a poor 2023 which has seen PSG lose eight times already and crash out of the Champions League. The manager says he’s already had words with his players and told them what he wants to see after their latest defeat. PSG will aim to get back to winning ways on Saturday in Ligue 1 against Nice.

What is going wrong with Paris Saint-Germain this season?
PSG exits the Champions League and domestic competitions yet again as the league title is the only potential silverware in sight. Splashing record-breaking fees on Neymar Jr and Kylian Mbappe failed massively. By the time the 2021-22 season began, many thought PSG had one of the greatest transfer windows of all time signing Lionel Messi and other superstars but failed to live the expectations.
One of the most popular attacking trio, expectations were high in stacking up the trophy cabinet. However, on and off-field issues have taken a huge hit at the Parisians. There were speculations of clashes between Mbappe and Neymar. Nevertheless, they are still on course to win the Ligue 1 trophy but two consecutive defeats put that at risk as well.
The squad currently has an average defense conceding 29 goals in 29 matches with many other teams doing a far better job. The midfield and attack do not contribute to defensive duties and the squad has looked vulnerable to a solid midfielder who can make the tackles. The Ligue 1 club would perhaps be better served by investing large amounts in their backline rather than glamorous options up front.
Overdependence on the front three is another massive issue to be addressed. When the attack is not in its best form the squad seems clueless and ineffective resulting in other clubs dominating the match. The team needs a long-term project sustained by results while also sticking by a manager that can guide the club to new heights.
