PSG’s Idrissa Gueye perceived as a hero in his home country of Senegal for not supporting the LGBTQ+ community in Europe: Reports

PSG

Last season, PSG midfielder, Idrissa Gueye came under scrutiny when he decided not to stand by his teammates in support of the LGBTQ+ community. During their away game against, Montpellier, Ligue 1 had announced that all player’s jerseys would have the rainbow imprint to show their support.

However, Idrissa Gueye was absent in that game and Mauricio Pochettino confirmed that the player’s absence was not due to injuries. While, this incident caused some chaos in France against the player, his close advisor, Cisse believes that Gueye still enjoyed the support of Senegal.

Speaking to  RMC Sport & Goal, Cisse said, “It’s a misunderstanding. We must not forget that Gueye was born in Senegal. He grew up there, he was educated there.”

“We respect everything that others do, but we don’t follow them in their culture. Culturally, no one would have understood if he had done anything other than what he did. He’s not the only one.”

“Today, Gueye has the total support of all Senegalese, of all Africans. In this case, we must not stigmatize the boy. He cannot justify this gesture. He was perceived as a hero in Senegal, of course. For us, Gueye is a hero.”

“If Gueye had done otherwise, what would we have said? We would have been much more shocked,” Cisse concluded. PSG have not officially ever released a statement regarding the player and his stance on the LGBTQ+ community.

Idrissa Gueye joined PSG from Everton for a fee of €30 million. The player has since been an important part of the squad, featuring 111 times since 2019. However, Gueye could be sold this summer as PSG look for new midfielders.
