Qatari fans target Germany for hypocrisy holding images of Ozil

To draw attention to what they interpreted as hypocrisy following the team’s anti-discrimination protest against Japan, a cluster of supporters carried up images of Mesut Ozil during Germany’s vital World Cup match against Spain on Sunday. Hansi Flick’s team covered their mouths in protest of FIFA’s judgment to forbid the inclusivity-promoting OneLove captain’s armband before their iconic 2-1 loss to Japan on Wednesday.

European captains, including those from Germany and England, wished to wear the “OneLove” armband. FIFA, even so, challenged to punish captains who wore the item, which was made in part to serve as a protest against anti-LGBTQ laws in Qatar.

Fans in the stadium were spotted carrying up photos of the retired Germany midfielder Ozil while the game was being played. Supporters were eager to draw attention to the hypocrisy of Germany’s anti-discrimination sign on Wednesday, given that a player had left the national team four years prior due to racism. This was referring to the series of Ozil’s retirement.

Ozil shockingly announced his retirement from international competition in 2018 after denouncing racism within the German FA. Ozil asserted that he was made the target of blame following Germany’s World Cup group-stage elimination, and faced a ‘feeling of racism and disrespect,” and thought he was “unwanted” as a member of the national team.

Germany held back Spain 1-1 in 2022 FIFA World Cup game

After a 1-1 tie with Spain on Monday, Germany continues to remain in contention for a Round of 16 place at the FIFA World Cup 2022. The outcome offered the four-time champions a much-needed one point to remain intact in Qatar, while Spain maintained their lead in Group E with four points.

Germany was in big trouble after granting a goal in the 62nd minute, which might have finished their campaign with a game to go. However, substitute Niclas Fuellkrug scored seven minutes before stoppage time to soothe the Germans down. They even had a chance for a late winner in stoppage time, but Spain came away with a point.

In their final group match, Germany will face Costa Rica, who are also in the contest and are third with three points beside Japan on goal difference, and a victory will take them to four points. So, if Japan loses, Germany will advance to the next round, along with Spain from the group.
