Carlo Ancelotti has commented on the situation after another shocking day for Real Madrid and their star forward Vinicius Junior as he gets sent off by the match referee after slapping the opponent Hugo Duro during Madrid’s defeat against Valencia. The match was nothing short of controversial as the Brazilian Vinicius Junior was once again subjected to racial abuse from the fans.
“This League has a racism problem, they can’t yell at Vinicius calling him m*nkey. The match has to stop, there is no other way.” the Madrid coach commented. Real Madrid conceded in the first half against Valencia and right after that, Vinicius and Co started pressing in the hope of leveling the score. Unfortunately, fans of Valencia chanted racist abuse toward Vinicius Junior whenever he came to score.
The Brazilian identified one of the abusers and quickly got the referee involved. The referee warned the fans that the match will be stopped if they don’t behave properly. In the closing minutes of the match, with Madrid still trailing, the Valencia goalkeeper came on to Vinicius Junior as he aggressively grabbed his shirt.
Vinicius did the same. Valencia striker Hugo Duro intervened by choking the Madrid star. Vinicius turned around and violently slapped the striker. The incident led the referee to show Vinicius a red card.
Brazilian president Lula and players support Vinicius Junior after the racist attack in La Liga match
Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has joined soccer clubs and players in coming out to support star striker Vinícius Júnior after he once more faced racist abuse in a Spanish league match on Sunday. The latest incident took place in Real Madrid’s 1-0 loss at Valencia, a match that had to be temporarily stopped after the Brazilian forward said he was insulted by a fan behind one of the goals at Mestalla Stadium.
Valencia fans were filmed making monkey chants toward Vinícius. Lula told a news conference in Japan on the sidelines of a G7 meeting that he hopes FIFA, the Spanish League and the other bodies “take measures so we don’t allow racism and fascism to take over” in the sport. “It is not fair that a poor boy who is winning in his life, becoming one of the best in the world, certainly the best at Real Madrid, is insulted in every stadium he goes to,” Lula said.
Several of his cabinet ministers also backed Vinicius and were critical of the Spanish league. Brazil’s Human Rights Minister Silvio Almeida said on Twitter: “The behavior of Spanish authorities and of the entities that govern its football is criminal. It shows undeniable acceptance of racism,” Almeida said. “Vinicius, I will be on your side to hold those that attack you accountable, but also those who omit themselves.”
