“One team got to go 2 years without receiving a penalty,” Real Madrid legend takes a dig at Barcelona over favoritisim from La Liga referees
Barcelona and Real Madrid legends clash against each other over FC Barcelona's corruption accusations.
Gerard Pique and Iker Casillas for the Spain national team
Real Madrid legend Iker Casillas was recently involved in a heated argument with former FC Barcelona defender Gerard Pique during a Kings League promotions event. The conversation revolved around the refereeing bias existing in La Liga, and both teams benefited from it in the past. As per Gerard Pique, Real Madrid has always had a soft corner for the match officials in Spain.
“Barca and Madrid have always been the most benefitted from the referees,” Pique said. To this, Iker Casillas responded bluntly that it was the other way around. “No, one team (Barcelona) got to go 2 years without receiving a penalty against it. It’s incredible,” Casillas exclaimed. The former goalkeeper’s claims have pushed the Catalan club towards more suspicion amidst recent speculations about their relationship with La Liga referees.
On the contrary, FC Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez has often complained about the referees’ decisions since joining the club as a manager. According to the chief, Barcelona was denied a penalty on multiple occasions this season in the Champions League. The Spaniard believes that his team was denied a scoring opportunity in decisive matches against Bayern Munich and Inter Milan.
It is true that Real Madrid has also suffered from inconsistent refereeing in domestic football over the past few seasons. This is enough to establish an idea about the lack of fair play in La Liga. As a result, this issue has often been voiced by the fans of Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, but the conditions have only worsened for Spanish football in recent years.

A look at FC Barcelona and Real Madrid’s performances in 2022-23 season
Two of the greatest clubs in football, Real Madrid and FC Barcelona share a bitter yet passionate rivalry in the sport. Real Madrid is having a rather slow start to their season after conquering the UEFA Champions League title last season. On the other hand, Xavi’s men appear to be in the concluding phase of the rebuilding process as they sit on top of the La Liga table.
The Catalans have lost only one game in the league this season, which came against Real Madrid. Barcelona is yet to lose their second game since suffering a 3-1 loss to Los Blancos earlier this season. Xavi’s side also hammered Real Madrid in a 3-1 victory to lift the Copa de Espana trophy in January. Carlos Ancelotti’s side is currently looking for a way to reduce the 8 point-gap between them and the league leaders.
Real Madrid and FC Barcelona will next face each other in the first leg of the semi-finals of Copa Del Rey on 3rd March 2023. Xavi will also be hosting the La Liga champions at Camp Nou on 20th March 2023 for the second El Clasico of La Liga. Do you think Barcelona can finally end their league title drought this year?
