Real Madrid to break all relations with Barcelona after corruption scandal: Reports
Barcelona surprised after Real Madrid's stance of breaking relations with the Catalan giants
Real Madrid is reportedly considering “breaking all relations” with FC Barcelona in a meeting with the Board of Directors on Monday. The Catalan side stands accused of corruption. They allegedly made payments totalling more than eight million euros to Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira, former vice president of Spain’s referee committee.
On Friday, a Barcelona court announced that the club had been charged with “corruption,” “breach of trust,” and “false business records.” The consequences for the La Liga leaders could be severe, with relegation on the list of possible punishments.
“FC Barcelona obtained and maintained a strictly confidential verbal agreement with Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira so that, in his capacity as vice-president of the technical arbitral committee (CTA) and in exchange for money, the latter carries out actions tending to benefit FC Barcelona in decisions by the referees,” said the public prosecutor’s office. Barcelona has denied the allegations.
According to Enriquez Negreira, Barcelona paid him as he was in an advisory role. He advised players on how to deal with various referees. Barcelona president Joan Laporta said, “Let it be clear, Barca have never bought referees, and Barca have never had the intention of buying referees, absolutely never.”
