Almost four weeks after news first broke about El Caso Negreira, which regards Barcelona’s involvement with Enriquez Negreira, former Vice President of the Referee’s Committee, Real Madrid has finally spoken publicly on the matter. Real Madrid issued a statement that said that they will appear at the trial against Barcelona. Prosecutors allege Barca paid £7.4m in return for favorable refereeing decisions.

In their meeting held today, the Real Madrid C. F. Board of Directors inspected the serious accusations brought by the Public Prosecutror’s Office against FC Barcelona, two of its former presidents, Josep María Bartomeu and Sandro Rosell, and executives, Albert Soler and Óscar Grau, based on alleged offenses of corruption in sports, among others, all related to the relationship the club maintained with the former Vice-President of the Technical Referees’ Committee (CTA), José María Enríquez Negreira.

Real Madrid had expressed their utmost concern regarding the gravity of the facts and reiterates its confidence in the legal system. The club has agreed that, in defense of its legitimate rights, Real Madrid will appear at the trial when the judge opens it up to the affected parties. Real Madrid has decided to take a step forward and will appear in court as soon as the judge decides to start the trial. Los Blancos had been silent ever since the case was published, but now they’ve decided that it’s time to seek justice.

Barcelona and Real Madrid appeared to be on fairly good terms off the pitch. This reportedly was because of their combined efforts to push through the idea of the European Super League and make it real. Although after the reported response by Real Madrid regarding the Negreira case, it remains to be seen whether relations between Barcelona and Real Madrid get affected.

Real Madrid faces big challenge in Champions League tie against Liverpool as key player set to miss the match

David Alaba

Even after beating Liverpool 5-2 in the first leg at Anfield, Real Madrid will be taking nothing for granted. Especially when they take on Liverpool in their Champions League last 16-second leg at Santiago Bernabeu.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side does have a crucial La Liga fixture four days later as they take on Barcelona in the second El Clasico match of the league season, with both dueling it out for the title. However, the full focus will be on ensuring the safe passage of the team to the quarter-finals of the Champions League by winning the second leg against Liverpool.

Mario Cortegana has confirmed that David Alaba will miss Wednesday’s match as he continues his recovery from a hamstring injury suffered in the first leg against Liverpool. It remains to be seen whether he’s available for El Clasico. However, Real Madrid will have Karim Benzema and Ferland Mendy in contention. Benzema missed Saturday’s victory over Espanyol, while Mendy has been out since January after suffering a hamstring injury against Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey. Ancelotti will be delighted to have the duo back as Real Madrid prepare for two crucial games in four days.
