Real Madrid and Barcelona are set to face each other on Saturday, July 29, at the AT&T Stadium in Texas, USA. It is going to be a friendly version of an El Classico. They faced in pre-season last year too with the Catalans winning that clash 1-0.
Real Madrid’s last season was mediocre by their standards as they lost out on the La Liga title by 10 points to Barcelona. In addition, they were knocked out of the Champions League semi-finals by eventual champions Manchester City. They did manage to win the Copa Del Rey, however, the failure to defend both their major titles, brought major criticism to the team. As they have sold their main talisman Karim Benzema, the club is now going through a transitional phase. Repeated links to Kylian Mbappe haven’t amounted to anything yet. They will however be looking to improve this season with a younger squad.
FC Barcelona managed to win the La Liga last season. They finished the league with an 88 points tally. This was a huge achievement considering their financial difficulties in the background. However, their European journey was once again a major failure. They were eliminated in the group stages of the Champions League after finishing third. They were sent back down to the Europa League where they faced Manchester United in the Round of 32. They lost that fixture 4-3 on aggregate, thus knocking them out of Europa too. They would look to improve their campaign this season while also defending the league title.

A look at Real Madrid and Barcelona’s pre-season so far

Barcelona recently lost to Arsenal 5-3 in their first pre-season game. While they managed to score first through Robert Lewandowski, this was quickly canceled by Bukayo Saka. Raphinha and Ferran Torres scored for the Catalans. However, Kai Havertz, Fabio Viera, and Leandro Trossard’s brace won it for Arsenal. Barcelona also had a virus outbreak in their camp weakening the squad. But they now seem to have fully recovered from it.
Real Madrid recently defeated Manchester United 2-0 through fantastic goals from new signings Jude Bellingham and Joselu. In fact, Joselu’s bicycle kick was lauded by both club and rival fans in the stands. Previously, they defeated AC Milan 3-2 through a brace from Fede Valverde and a goal from Vinicius Jr. They have started using a new formation of 4-4-2 which incorporates 4 midfielders in the starting lineup.
