Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema wins Onze d’Or ahead of the likes of Sadio Mane and Robert Lewandowski
Karim Benzema
The French striker wins the Onze d’Or for a second consecutive year to wrap off the brilliant season he had with the Madrid outfit.
The Onze d’Or (European Footballer of the Year award) is awarded exclusively by the French magazine Onze Mondial at the end of each season to honor the best individuals.
In the 2020/21 season, Benzema was honored by the Onze d’Or when he defeated a host of football superstars such as Lionel Messi, Robert Lewandowski and Kylian Mbappe.
This season, Benzema’s talent shined even brighter as he scored 44 goals in 46 matches, helping Real to win the Spanish Super Cup, La Liga and the Champions League.
Particularly in Europe’s elite competition, Benzema scored 15 of the team’s 29 goals, and 10 of these strikes proved decisive for Real to win against PSG, Chelsea and Manchester City in the knockout round, respectively.
With such great performances, Benzema was honored for the second time in a row by the Onze d’Or. Specifically, Benzema won the Player of the Year award for the 2021/22 season from the Onze d’Or with 37.2% of the votes, surpassing Liverpool’s Sadio Mane (36.1%) and Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski (10%).
Lionel Messi back Karim Benzema to win the elusive Ballon d’Or
Lionel Messi feels that Benzema deserves to win the Ballon d’Or this year after an exceptional season he had with Real Madrid. The Frenchman scored a second-half hat-trick against Messi’s PSG to eliminate them and progress in the competition which they eventually won against Liverpool in the final.
“I think there are no doubts, it’s very clear that Benzema had a spectacular year and ended up winning the Champions League, being fundamental from the last 16 onwards in every game. I think there is no doubt this year with the Ballon d’Or,” said the Argentine.
