Former Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo was accused of defrauding Spain’s tax office of €14.7 million in unpaid taxes back in 2017. Madrid’s state prosecutor accused Ronaldo of four counts of tax fraud from 2011 to 2014.

Ronaldo’s agency Gestifute reportedly said that the player was up to date on his taxes. The agency’s statement read, “There is no offshore structure for evading taxes. There has never been concealment, or the slightest intention to conceal.”

The Portuguese maestro also released a statement about being accused of tax fraud. He said, “I am very relaxed about it. The truth is I’m very, very relaxed. I know that these things can be resolved with the best decisions. So I am good. I can say that from the depth of my heart, looking straight into the camera. When you do things well you can go to bed feeling relaxed. And I sleep well always, always.”

Ronaldo was reportedly accused of using a shell company in the Virgin Islands to hide his total income from Spain’s tax office. It was said that the player “intentionally” did not declare an income of €28.4m (£25m) which was related to image rights. And he only declared €11.5m of earnings from 2011-14 when his real income was almost €43m.

The Portuguese star was also accused of falsely reporting income as coming from real estate. This greatly reduced his tax rate as per reports.

A person who is charged with a nonviolent offense and is sentenced to 24 months or less doesn’t get jail time. This is applicable in Spain if the individual doesn’t have a past criminal record either.

Cristiano Ronaldo pleaded guilty to tax fraud in front of the court and reportedly accepted a deal with Spanish prosecutors in the case. The former Real Madrid star was handed a fine of €18.8 million ($21.4 million). He also received a 23-months jail time. But he was relieved of jail sentence and was only fined instead.
