Cristiano Ronaldo recently took to Instagram to show off his physique. The Portuguese superstar is currently on holiday in the Sardinia Islands, Italy, after ending the season with Al Nassr. He took to Instagram to post an image of his physique, but the eagle-eyed fans were quick to notice the superstar’s painted toenails and were perplexed.

In the image, Ronaldo can be seen relaxing on a sofa set. His chiseled abs are full on display. Yet his toenails, which were painted black garnered attention from the fan. Turns out Cristiano has good reason to paint his toenails black.

The protective coating is said to be the explanation for the 38-year-old’s toenail painting. According to the German magazine BILD, athletes paint or wrap their nails with a protective coating to preserve their nails. Many elite athletes use this to prevent fungus and germs from damaging their toes when trapped in damp shoes for hours.

However, Ronaldo isn’t the only high-level athlete who paints his toes during competition. Former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski does the same. It is stated that it helps fighters keep their toes from cracking or breaking apart. Thus, athletes paint nails not due to fashion but for their own well-being and better performance. Cristiano takes good care of his body and painting his toenails is just a part of it as well.

Cristiano Ronaldo has very rarely gone a season without a trophy in his brilliant professional career. However, he has not won a trophy in the previous two seasons, including his time at Manchester United and his initial six months at Al-Nassr. The superstar has commented on his expectations about next season with Al-Nassr-

“We improved a lot. Let’s say the last five or six months, the team improve a lot. Even the league, all the teams improve and my team as well. It takes time sometimes. But, if you believe it’s your goal, I think everything is possible. I expected to win something this year but we didn’t. But, next year I am really positive and confident that things will change and we’ll do in a better way. So, let’s believe in that and work on that,” said Ronaldo.

Ronaldo is keeping patient and working hard, this has been his ethic over the course of his career. Meanwhile, his club Al-Nassr is making moves to strengthen the squad. They recently acquired Croatian midfielder Marcelo Brozovic from Inter for €18 million.
