Roger Federer pens down special message for Lionel Messi after he features in Time’s Top 100 most influencial people

Tennis legend Roger Federer has paid tribute to Lionel Messi after the Argentine was named in TIME magazine’s 100 Most Influential People of 2023. He has been named so after captaining his team to a World Cup victory, completing football. Tennis star Federer, who is arguably the greatest tennis player of all time, has penned a tribute to Messi in the award announcement list, comparing his football to art.

Federer, who announced his retirement from tennis in September 2022, also wrote about how he hopes 35-year-old Messi can continue his career for some time to come. Messi had a tremendous 2022, both from start and finish. With PSG, he won Ligue 1 and with Argentina, he would win the Finalissima. The ultimate prize came in the form of a World Cup triumph in the 22nd edition, labelling him as the greatest player the sport has ever seen.

“Lionel Messi’s goal-scoring records and championship wins need no recounting here. What stands out to me about Messi, 35, is his consistent greatness over so many years. This is so difficult to achieve, and then maintain. He dribbles like a magician, and his angular passes are works of art. His awareness and anticipation are almost beyond comprehension,” Federer wrote.

“My career has just come to an end. I now realize how much weight we athletes carry. But in our daily lives, we don’t even realize it. For a football player like Messi, that weight likely feels more massive, as he represents both a world-renowned club and a very passionate country. Argentina’s World Cup victory was magnificent. Even those who don’t follow football must have realized the true impact of the world’s most popular game”.

Lionel Messi is reportedly considering a move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr. The Argentine is ready to join Cristiano Ronaldo to form a formidable partnership in Saudi Arabia. Messi is seriously considering joining Ronaldo as a move to Barcelona looks unlikely. The 2022 FIFA World Cup winner is planning his next move as his contract at PSG expires in the summer.

The French side was willing to extend his contract, but their FFP situation has seen their plans change. Moreover, PSG fans have turned on the former Barcelona star after the club’s exit from the UEFA Champions League. Al-Hilal coach Ramon Diaz spoke about the possibility of signing Messi, “It grows all over the world; it was seen in the World Cup. Clubs can have eight foreigners, you can have the best because there are no financial problems.

“It happened with Ronaldo, and most of Al Hilal’s foreigners are international. If they continue like this, they will grow. The presence of Cristiano is important to give football more expectations. They have the possibility of buying Messi, imagine the power they have.” Al-Hilal is reportedly still interested in signing Messi and could join the race to sign the Argentine and is considering a mammoth offer in the table to lure the Argentine.
