Argentina was the bookies’ favorite to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar before the tournament started. However, a shocking loss against Saudi Arabia in their opening game led to fans writing them down. Lionel Messi-inspired victory in their next group-stage fixtures against Mexico & Poland meant they topped their group with still doubts over their defensive capabilities.

After nail-biting victories against Australia and Netherlands in the knockout rounds, the latter of which went all the way to penalties, Argentina looked to be showcasing their true potential. Stars like Alexis Mac Allister and Enzo Fernandez have stepped up when it mattered and snatched the starting spots of veterans such as Di Maria and Papu Gomez.

In their semifinal clash against Croatia, Argentina looked ruthless with Messi, in particular, showcasing one of his vintage performances. Julian Alvarez has cemented his place over Lautaro Martinez as Messi’s partner in attack. Now in the final hurdle against France, Argentina will have to show why were frontrunners to win football’s premier competition.
