Manchester United centrerback Lisandro Martinez has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after fracturing a metatarsal bone in his foot. However, the Argentinian defender is expected to make a full recovery in time to be ready for the start of next season. Martinez sustained the injury in Thursday night’s 2-2 draw with Sevilla in the quarter-final of the UEFA Europa League.
His World Cup-winning Argentina teammates, Gonzalo Montiel and Marcos Acuna, of Sevilla, helped lift him off the field in a sporting gesture that saw warm applause from the Old Trafford crowd. The defender looked utterly distraught as he was carried off the pitch. It looks as if it could be bad enough to rule him out for the rest of the season.
Martinez has been one of the team’s most consistent performers and a candidate for Player of the Season behind Marcus Rashford and Casemiro. He is not just a no-nonsense, brave defender, but he is also an outstanding passer and many of United’s best-attacking moves begin with his pin-point passes from deep. The Argentinian defender is expected to make a full recovery in time to be ready for the start of next season. His departure was soon followed by a Sevilla equaliser as it is all to play for in Seville.

While Lisandro’s first season at United has sadly come to a premature end, it will remain a memorable one for the centerback having made 45 club appearances whilst establishing himself as a firm fan favorite and helping the team to win the Carabao Cup. In December, Martinez became only the fifth United player to win the World Cup, as Argentina beat France in the Qatar 2022 final.
The Argentine central defender has been a rock at the heart of the Red Devils’ defence since his summer arrival. In 44 appearances, he has helped them keep 20 clean sheets. However, fans are worried that Manchester United’s season is in danger after Martinez had to be taken off injured. It is understood that he will be sidelined for a duration of six weeks.
