The Spanish FA President, Luis Rubiales, consoled Spanish player Jenni Hermoso in a somewhat ‘uncomfortable’ manner. Hermoso moved to the podium as Spain achieved their maiden World Cup victory over England when the incident occurred. The 45-year-old greeted the other players with handshakes. Then, he hugged and held Hermoso, grabbing her head before kissing her on the lips.

The player later confessed, “Eh…yeah, I did not enjoy that.” to Spanish TV station LA 1. This has sparked massive controversy amongst fans and players. While the celebrations remain at the top of their jubilance, the incident has garnered enormous outrage. During the live broadcast, many fans went so far as to label it “harassment.” In the 69th minute, Hermoso’s inability to convert a penalty against England led to her dejection. Mary Earps, the English goalkeeper, saved her shot.

In the first half, Olga Carmona’s shot gave Spain the lead. To their horror, despite having more opportunities to score in the second half, the English women could not do so. The 33-year-old, who has enjoyed a distinguished career with Barcelona and PSG, dedicated the victory to her Spanish family and friends. She and her colleagues were still in awe of their accomplishments, but it was a historic moment for the nation.

However, fans and even players have not appreciated the over-intimate move by Rubiales. Hermoso later said she was happier about their result and couldn’t believe that her team had finally become World Champions. While the celebrations took a weird turn, the unnecessary controversy made the entire event gather unwanted attention.

The Euro winners had high expectations from their current World Cup campaign, with superstars like Lauren JamesChloe Kelly, and Lauren Hemp. The three Lionesses had a great run to the finals only to miss the title by a narrow margin defeat to the La Rojas. The Spanish Women’s team played a game of football which reminded football fans of Barcelona’s tiki-taka.

The team’s strong spirit was evident as several Barcelona players took to the field to defend their lead. Olga Carmona’s first-half goal proved decisive, securing the team’s inaugural victory despite the second-half save of Jenni Hermoso’s penalty. Even though James ends the campaign as the tournament’s highest assisted, the loss would certainly be harsh as a professional.

It was also a historic World Cup for hosts Australia almost came third. Throughout the competition, the sport celebrated equality and emergence, creating numerous instances of historical significance. With this massive achievement, Spain has become the only second nation to win both the Men’s and Women’s World Cups. This only goes on to prove the cultural influence of the sport in the countries and what it means to the people.
