‘The quadruple is still on’- Twitter goes wild as Liverpool wins the 150th edition of the FA Cup

Liverpool won the 150th Men’s FA Cup final after beating Chelsea on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes. It was yet another cup final between Chelsea and Liverpool, another pulsating end-to-end match, another showpiece event decided on the lottery of penalties. Thomas Tuchel sprung a surprise before kick-off with Romelu Lukaku being preferred up front in place of Kai Havertz for Chelsea.

Liverpool meanwhile opted for Luis Diaz up top instead of Diogo Jota alongside Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané. It was the Reds who were in the ascendancy early on with Salah clipping a header over the bar and Diaz looking lively down the left-hand side. And it was the Colombian who went closest to scoring in eight minutes as he was played in by Trent Alexander-Arnold but fired a one-on-one straight at Edouard Mendy.

The West London side was slowly getting back into things and went close to opening the scoring on 23 minutes as Christian Pulisic found some space inside the area but dragged his effort just wide. Chelsea was knocking on the door now and could have scored once again soon after as Marcos Alonso’s close-range effort was smothered by Alisson.

There was some terrible news for Liverpool at the half-hour mark as Salah was forced off with an injury but his replacement Jota almost poked home right before the break, only to toe his effort over the crossbar.

Into the second half and there was another early scare for Liverpool as Alonso curled a free-kick into the area that crashed off of Alisson’s bar. Luis Diaz was clearly Liverpool’s most dangerous attacker and he went close to scoring on 53 minutes, firing an effort just wide from the edge of the area. With 10 minutes to go, it was Diaz again who almost broke the deadlock as his shot from a tight angle rattled off the outside of the post.

Klopp’s side was pushing for a winner now and almost had it as Andy Robertson’s back-post effort fired off the post. However, it wasn’t to be with the game going to extra time. There was some more bad news for the Merseyside club at the break as Virgil van Dijk was forced off with an injury.

In the penalty shoot-out, it was Chelsea who missed first thanks to Cesar Azpilicueta but Mané did the same when he had the chance to be a hero. Mason Mount missed his effort and then Konstantinos Tsimikas scored to hand Liverpool the trophy.

Liverpool’s triumph against Chelsea in the FA Cup final means that they have won at least two trophies this season i.e the Carabao Cup and the FA cup. Premier League is still a possibility with Manchester City just three points ahead of the Reds.

They have their Champions League final against Real Madrid in Paris on May 28 which means their chances of finishing a quadruple is still a possibility that is never achieved in the history of English Football.
